Our First Ever Ice Climbing Adventure in Munising, Michigan
Had we heard of ice climbing? Yes.
Had we seen ice climbing in person? No.
Had we tried ice climbing? Another No.
That all changed while we were in Munising for our an ice climbing adventure.
We always enjoy trying new things that are available to do throughout Michigan. We were planning a winter adventure in Munising and ice climbing was at the top of the list. In Munising, Michigan Ice Fest and Down Wind Sports offers guided services and rentals. Our planning started off with sharing that we have no ice climbing experience at all. The first thing we were told was that doesn't matter and they love having people out for the first time.
We arrived at Down Wind Sports in Munising, which is a great outdoor gear store. One side of the building is all set up as the spot for Michigan Ice Fest and the guided services and gear rental. Since this was our first time, we tried on the boots to make sure we had the right fit and learned how to put on the rest of the gear that we would need. This included crampons (the things that go on your feet for climbing), climbing harnesses, helmets and ice tools. After we had all the right gear, we headed to our climbing spot.
Our climb took place at a spot called No Boundaries located at Pictured Rocks. Pictured Rocks is a world famous ice climbing destination with a variety of options based on skill levels and other criteria. The ice formations were incredible!
As we geared up, our guide for the day got everything set up and in a short amount of time we were ready to climb. A great thing about this was the learning that came along with it. How to use the ice tools. how to move our feet with the crampons. How to rest. By the time we were making our first swings of the ice tools we had confidence.
Throughout the climb, our guide made sure to communicate on what to do while also letting us figure it out. It was the perfect balance. With each swing of an ice tool and movement of our feet, we made our way closer to the top. The success of reaching the top was rewarding, especially since this was our first time. From the top of the ice formation we were able to see views of an icy Lake Superior.
Overall we had an amazing experience ice climbing and would recommend it to anyone looking for a new challenge!
